Eastlake has gone a perfect 3-0 against St. Augustine recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. Eastlake will venture away from home to face off against St. Augustine at 4:00 p.m. The last three games Eastlake has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Eastlake took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They had just enough and edged out Patrick Henry 2-0.
The result came thanks to Nick Romero's shutout, as he gave up just four hits and racked up six Ks. What's more, he gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024.
At the plate, Eastlake's victory was truly a team effort as two different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Joel Vargas, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Austin Stroberg also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, St. Augustine waltzed into their contest on Monday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They blew past the Highlanders 9-1.
Grayson Boles tossed a big game, striking out ten batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because St. Augustine is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 2-3 otherwise.
On the hitting side, Shane Miranda was incredible, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Drake Konja, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
Eastlake pushed their record up to 5-2 with the win, which was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.2 runs over those games. As for St. Augustine, the win got them back to even at 4-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Eastlake has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Augustine struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Eastlake was able to grind out a solid victory over St. Augustine in their previous meeting back in April of 2023, winning 9-6. The rematch might be a little tougher for Eastlake since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
