Video: Top 10 Games of the Week(6) Katy (Texas) vs. Manvel (Texas)
Friday, 7:30 p.m. Central timeWhy it's big: It's the third-consecutive state quarterfinal-round meeting between these Houston-area powers that are the highest-scoring teams in the 6A/Division II playoffs.
No. 6 Katy (13-0) – which eliminated Manvel the last two years -- has annihilated its first three postseason foes by a combined 202-20. Manvel (11-2) won its first three playoff games by a combined 216-91.
A win Friday night at NRG Stadium would punch Katy's ticket to at least the state semifinals for the fourth-straight year and 13th time in 14 seasons. The Tigers are favored to win their sixth state crown since 2000.
This is the sixth-straight year with at least 11 wins for a Manvel program that played its first varsity season in 2007. The Mavericks reached the 4A state championship game in 2011 but lost.
Names to watch: Houston-bound safety
Collin Wilder and Northwestern recruits
Paddy Fisher and
Travis Whillock lead a Katy defense that shut out six of its last seven opponents. On offense, keep an eye on freshman running back
Deondrick Glass. He rushed for 641 yards and 14 touchdowns in the last five games.
Four-star senior
D'Eriq King completed 13 of 14 passes for a season-high 306 yards with four touchdowns in Manvel's 75-14 rout of Strake Jesuit (Houston) last week. The TCU recruit also has over 600 yards rushing this season. Three-star Mississippi recruit
D'Vaughn Pennamon leads Manvel with 1,531 rushing yards, including 574 in the last two games.
