3A Conference 17 recap November 13, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in 3A Conference 17 this week, Havelock beat West Craven 21-7. The win marks 11th in a row for the the Rams.
White Oak lost to Jacksonville 35-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Reed Mokaio ran for 70 yards in the loss.
The Eagles' dynamic duo of Alkeim Harley and Tyrone Brown proved to be unstoppable against Havelock, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Harley threw for 166 yards and 1 touchdown and Brown had 64 yards receiving. Kenny McDaniel helped West Craven's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 40 yards.
Shaunee Meadows was a key player and the best on defense this week as Swansboro beat Richlands. The 5-foot-11 sophomore grabbed 2 sacks.
Chris Phipps provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Pirates bested the Wildcats. He completed 5 passes for 57 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 201 yards. Phipps' key target this week was Deandre Thompkins, who caught 2 passes for 38 yards.
Havelock's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Rams feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Travis Sabdo has thrown for 1,604 yards and 23 touchdowns this season, while Michael Bowman has 28 catches for 497 yards.
Swansboro's Phipps needs only 46 yards against Southern Nash next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Phipps has rushed for 954 yards on 167 carries so far this year.
As it stands, the Cardinals are in third, while West Craven is in fourth.
