The Burney Raiders will challenge the Biggs Wolverines at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Burney 2.8, Biggs 3.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Burney is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 victory over Chester. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last three times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Mia Perez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on three hits and racked up eight Ks.
On the hitting side, Burney's win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Natalia Maldonado, who went 1-for-3 with one run. Emily Aubuchon also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Biggs came tearing into Thursday's contest with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.9 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Eagles an 18-0 shutout. The Wolverines might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 18 games by six runs or more this season.
Gracie Sheppard made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Biggs got a massive performance out of Emma Bermudez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. That's the most hits Bermudez has posted since back in April of 2024. Natalie Harris-Villalobos was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Burney's victory was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-3. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Biggs, their record is now 23-3-1.
Burney suffered a grim 11-0 defeat to Biggs when the teams last played back in March. Can the Raiders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
