Ryan Winchester put in work while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That double was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Dawson Sukeforth was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Eli Bennett was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
As for Washington Academy, their victory was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-2. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games.
Like Bucksport, Washington Academy also got a great game from a two-way player: Trevor Shimabukuro. Throwing, Shimabukuro struck out ten batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off three hits. Meanwhile, James Welch pitched 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the most strikeouts Shimabukuro has posted since back in May. At the plate, Shimabukuro went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs, while Welch went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Colby Moholland, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May. The team also got some help courtesy of Daniel Gardner, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Bucksport will host Searsport at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Washington Academy, they will be playing at home against Calais at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
