Baseball Recap: Briarfield Academy Drops Season-High Score on Union Christian Academy

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Briarfield Academy). Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Union Christian Academy Lions a 22-0 shutout on Tuesday. With that victory, the Rebels brought their scoring average up to 7.2 runs per game.

Jackson Thornton and Brock Johnson made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Thornton tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Johnson pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave Thornton a new career-high in strikeouts (five). At the plate, Thornton scored three runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-4, while Johnson scored a run while going 1-for-4. Thornton has become a key player for Briarfield Academy: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-4 otherwise.

In other batting news, Maverick Weeks and Ryder Jones did most of the damage at the plate: Weeks scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2, while Jones got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. Those two hits gave Weeks a new career-high. Zach Lovell was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.

The win (which was Briarfield Academy's fourth in a row) raised their record to 8-4. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 10.5 hits in those games compared to only 5.5 in the others. As for Union Christian Academy, their loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 0-3.

Coincidentally, Briarfield Academy and Union Christian Academy will both be playing Riverdale Academy the next time they take the field. Briarfield Academy will host Riverdale Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, while Union Christian Academy will head out to face them at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
