Jefferson Area is a perfect 8-0 against Lakeside since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Falcons will head out to challenge the Dragons at 5:00 p.m. The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with three consecutive losses for Jefferson Area and eight for Lakeside.
Things were looking good for Jefferson Area after they put the first run on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They took an 8-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of Edgewood. That's two games in a row now that the Falcons have lost by exactly four runs.
Olivia Lewis spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and three unearned) runs on 12 hits and racked up eight Ks.
On the hitting side, Alaina Barress and Marillia Matuz stepped up to the plate in a big way. Barress went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI, while Matuz went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Makenna Stanich also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Lakeside lost 11-1 to Pymatuning Valley on Tuesday.
Lakeside saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sophia Matrisciano, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
Jefferson Area now has a losing record of 7-8. As for Lakeside, their loss dropped their record down to 1-9.
Lakeside's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Jefferson Area has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.5 hits per game. It's a different story for Lakeside, though, as they've been averaging 12.3 hits. Given Jefferson Area's sizable advantage in that area, the Dragons will need to find a way to close that gap.
Jefferson Area took their victory against Lakeside when the teams last played two weeks ago by a conclusive 22-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Falcons since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
