Basketball Recap: South Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Gavin Devoe and Sawyer Walker

It was a proper cat-fight when South took on Derby on Friday. The South Cougars opened the new year with a less-than-successful 63-50 defeat to the Derby Panthers. The loss continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now lost eight in a row.

Despite the defeat, South had strong showings from Sawyer Walker, who went 6 of 11 en route to 18 points and eight rebounds, and Gavin Devoe, who posted ten points. That's the most points Walker has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Kobie Henley, who earned eight points and five boards.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Derby to victory, but perhaps none more so than Cale Clingan, who went 7 for 13 on his way to 17 points and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jack Ulwelling, who put up 16 points.

South's loss dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Derby, their victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-0.

South has already played their next game (against Haysville Campus), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Derby has already played their next match, a 68-66 win against Valley Center on the 7th.
