Independence will venture away from home to face off against the Briar Woods Falcons at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Independence is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
Independence is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Virginia's top teams: Lightridge, who was ranked fourth at the time (Independence was ranked 15th). Independence fell just short of Lightridge by a score of 5-4 on Thursday. Independence has struggled against Lightridge recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.
Independence saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Halliday Fulcher, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Briar Woods came out on top against Potomac Falls on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run fourth inning. The Falcons put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 10-1 win.
Caprice Bohmer made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over six innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 18 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one RBI.
In other batting news, Kara Yurish was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April. Gabbie Cornista also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Briar Woods always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .553. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Potomac Falls only posted an OBP of .267.
Briar Woods is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Independence, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-4.
Both Independence and Briar Woods just can't seem to miss. Independence has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.1 hits per game. However, it's not like Briar Woods struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.8 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Independence came out on top in a nail-biter against Briar Woods in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 3-2. Does Independence have another victory up their sleeve, or will Briar Woods turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
