Newberry Academy will head out on the road to challenge the Cambridge Academy Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Newberry Academy comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 21 points in their last eight games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
Last Friday, Newberry Academy was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 26-21 to Richard Winn Academy. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Newberry Academy in their matchups with Richard Winn Academy: they've now lost four in a row.
Cambridge Academy has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell just short of Easley HomeSchool by a score of 37-34. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss Cambridge Academy has suffered yet this season.
Cambridge Academy's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Jillian Mapes, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and six steals, and Indya Southerland who scored 11 points along with three steals. Southerland hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Izzy Southerland, who scored four points.
Newberry Academy bumped their record down to 2-11 with that defeat, which was their fifth straight at home. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 18.2 points per game. As for Cambridge Academy, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-5.
Things could have been worse for Newberry Academy, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 33-19 loss to Cambridge Academy in their previous matchup last Friday. Can Newberry Academy avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
