Lake Country Lutheran is 9-1 against Brookfield Academy since May of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Lightning will face off against the Blue Knights at 4:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Tuesday, Lake Country Lutheran made easy work of Living Word Lutheran and carried off a 21-6 win.
Ava Budnik made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Budnik was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Eden Mueller and Kierstyn Black did most of the damage at the plate: Mueller scored five runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances, while Black went 4-for-5 with one home run, four runs, and five RBI. Katelyn Meulendyke was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in two of her five plate appearances.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Brookfield Academy, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Saturday. They put the hurt on St. Francis with a sharp 11-1 victory on Tuesday. The Blue Knights haven't had any issues with the Mariners recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Like Lake Country Lutheran, Brookfield Academy also got a great game from a two-way player: Makenna Best. She struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and not a single walk). Best was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Brookfield Academy let Riley Bodor and Lila Mason run wild. Bodor scored two runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4, while Mason scored a run and stole a base while going 4-for-4. Those four hits gave Bodor a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Olivia Schmidt, who went 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Brookfield Academy's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Lake Country Lutheran, the win got them back to even at 1-1.
Lake Country Lutheran took their victory against Brookfield Academy in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 6-0 score. Do the Lightning have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Blue Knights turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
