Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), ranked No. 16 in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school basketball rankings, opened its season in October with a 135-66 win over Virginia Prep Sports for the highest single game score in the nation for the 2021 season. So where does Oak Hill Academy's 135-point total rank among the all-time national high scores? Barely within 100 points.
Kansas City High School, now known as Wyandotte (Kansas City, Kan.), set what is believed to be the all-time record for most points in a single game when it knocked off the Rainbow Athletic Club 234-2 in 1923. The more modern record belongs to Jackson City (Jackson, Ky.), which topped Woodbridge Academy 215-28 in 1992. Those two outings are the top entries on the MaxPreps list of the highest winning totals in high school basketball history.
With a minimum qualifying criteria of 150 points, nearly 100 teams have made the list. Leading the way is high-scoring Hobbs (N.M.), which became legendary for its fast-paced, high-flying games under coach Ralph Tasker, who retired as one of the nation's all-time winningest coaches with 1,121 wins. Playing without the benefit of a 24-second clock or a three-point line, Hobbs averaged a national record 114.6 points in 1970 (since broken by Yates in 2010) and has four games over 150 points on the list.
Sources for the list include Paul Luchter's Luckyshow.org website, the NFHS record book, state historians Chuck Langerman (New Jersey), Becky Taylor (Georgia), Buddy Collings (Florida), state association record books, Cal-Hi Sports Record Book by Mark Tennis and various newspapers accessed via Newspapers.com.

Highest winning totals in high school basketball history234 — Kansas City, now Wyandotte (Kansas City, Kan.)
Opponent: Rainbow Athletic Club
Score: 234-2
Date: Jan. 15, 1923
Note:
Whether or not this is a true high school game is debatable since the
opponent was a "club" team. However it wasn't uncommon in the first half
of the century for high schools to play non-high school opponents.
Kansas City, now known as Wyandotte, listed the Rainbow Athletic Club
game on its list of wins during the 1923 season when it went 35-0 and
won the national tournament in Chicago. Harold Schmidt had 96 points in
the win while teammate Herb Proudfit had 66 and Harold Zuber had 42
points. Wyandotte holds the Kansas state record for state championships
with 20 state titles.
215 — Jackson City (Jackson, Ky.)
Opponent: Woodbridge Academy
Score: 215-28
Date: Feb. 10, 1992
Note:
Jackson City had defeated Woodbridge 135-17 earlier in the season and
coach Ed Lowdenback had publicly stated, according to the Lexington
Herald-Leader, that his team would attempt to break the reported
national record of 211 points against Woodbridge. The Woodbridge team
had only 14 players, 10 of whom were freshmen or younger including one
female. Jamie Clay had 64 points while Chris McIntosh had 54. Five
others reached double figures.
211 — Grand Avenue (DeQuincy, La.) *
Opponent: Audrey Memorial (Cameron, La.)
Score: 211-29
Date: Jan. 29, 1964
Note:
Participating in the segregated Louisiana Interscholastic Athletic and
Literary Association, Grand Avenue led 103-19 at halftime after scoring
70 points in the second quarter. Grand Avenue went on to outscored
Audrey Memorial 108-10 in the second half. The score was considered to
be a national record at the time, perhaps because the Kansas City score
was unknown or was not considered a high school event. Raymond Clarkston
had 48 points, Alvin Farris had 38 and Charles Hodges had 34 in the
win.
198 — Lake Charles-Boston (Lake Charles, La.)
Opponent: South Cameron
Score: 198-34
Date: Jan. 30, 1976
Note:
David Lawrence poured in 65 points and Dennis Mayo added 46 points for
Boston, which was 29-3 on the season while South Cameron was 11-13.
Boston led 44-0 after one quarter and 97-9 at halftime.
197 — Loudon (Tenn.)
Opponent: McMinn County
Score: 197-57
Date: Feb. 14, 1956
Note:
The halftime score for this game was just 39-34 with Loudon in the
lead. However McMinn coach J.B. Ace Adams reportedly pulled his starters
in the second half after complaining about the "lax officiating" that
was resulting in rough play as well as the ejection by McMinn's best
player in the first half. According to the Chattanooga Daily Times,
McMinn County stopped guarding Loudon players in the second half and
rarely shot the ball. At the end of the game, McMinn players were
passing the ball to Loudon and "just passed it in to them after
baskets." Twice McMinn shot at the Loudon basket. Loudon scored 158
points in the second half, including 94 in the fourth quarter. Reed
Stamey had 62 points for Loudon.
193 — Blanche Ely (Pompano Beach, Fla.)
Opponent: Carver (Delray, Fla.)
Score: 193-58
Date: Jan. 19, 1965
Note: Johnny
Jones had 85 points for Ely in a game that featured a 12-2 Ely against
an 0-4 Carver. Ely led 53-9 at the quarter, 100-32 at half.
192 — Resurrection (Minneapolis) *
Opponent: Christ the King
Score: 192-31
Date: Jan. 16, 1944
Note: This
game is a confusing one. The National Federation of High Schools Record
Book lists Resurrection from Memphis (Tenn.) and the year of the game
as 1945. However the contest was a matchup between two Catholic school
teams from Minnesota in 1944. The Star Tribune called the game an
"informal intermediate" game, making it even more confusing. The contest
was also played with 14-minute quarters rather than eight. Resurrection
had four players score more points than Christ the King. Tom Lorimer
had 55 points for the winners while Bob Swift scored 42, Ted Ofstedahl
had 36 and Bob Tennyson had 33. The Minnesota State High School League
does not recognize the game in its state record book.

three-pointers.

Opponent: Sheepshead Bay
Score: 179-51
Date: Feb. 9, 1982
Note:
Andre Ervin had 52 points, Kenneth Williams had 24 points and 15
assists and Kenneth Woods had 17 points and 29 rebounds for Hamilton,
which broke its own state record from the year before when it scored 168
points.
178 — Heritage Christian (Cleveland, Texas)
Opponent: Banff Christian (Houston)
Score: 178-28
Date: Jan. 16, 2001
Note:
Cedric Hensley was reportedly having surgery after Heritage Christian's
game against Banff Christian and was going to miss over a week of play,
so his teammates decided to do something special by repeatedly giving
him the ball. Coach Jerome Tang told the Victoria Advocate, "Our goal
was to have Ced play as much of the game as possible and get him 50
points, but he had that by halftime." Hensley finished with a Texas
state record 101 points.

Date: Feb. 24, 1961

led by Fred Hood with 26. Two nights earlier, Mary Smith had lost to
Norcom 139-33 with John Morris of Norcom scoring 127 points.
172 — Walsh (Ottumwa, Iowa) *
Opponent: Blakesburg
Score: 172-12
Date: Feb. 17, 1969
Note:
The starters only played the first quarter, but it didn't matter for
Blakesburg, which was winless on the season. Walsh, 16-3, outscored
Blakesburg 41-0 in the second quarter. Gary Turner led eight players in
double figures with 30 points.
172 — Dixon (Mo.)
Opponent: Stoutland
Score: 172-34
Date: Dec. 6, 1968
Note:
The first string outscored Stoutland 40-8 in the first quarter,
prompting Dixon to put in the second string. And then things got worse.

171 — Leelanau (Glen Arbor, Mich.)
Opponent: Freesoil
Score: 171-94

Note:
Anton Phillips was looking to seal the league scoring title with a big
game against Freesoil and he got it. The junior, who was averaging 30.9
points per game, scored 84 in the win. Leelanau coach Larry Smith told
Mick McCabe of the Detroit Free Press that the court at Freesoil was
barely longer than a volleyball court, resulting in easy fast break
baskets.

Opponent: Chesterhill
