Baseball Recap: Tampa Catholic Wins Going Away Against Cardinal Mooney

Tampa Catholic barely beat Cardinal Mooney the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Crusaders were the clear victors by a 10-1 margin over the Cougars on Friday. Considering the Crusaders have won seven matches by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Tampa Catholic let Cal Johnson and Jack Smythe run wild. Johnson went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one double, while Smythe scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3. What's more, Smythe posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in February. Another player making a difference was Jayden Mera, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Tampa Catholic has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. As for Cardinal Mooney, their defeat dropped their record down to 16-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Tampa Catholic will host Barren County at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Cardinal Mooney, they will be playing at home against Calvary Christian at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Cougars 2.7, the Warriors 1.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
