After each having a week off, the Mount Vernon Mustangs and the Savannah Country Day Hornets will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 2:00 p.m. on the 14th. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.
Savannah Country Day will be up against a hot Mount Vernon team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. The Mustangs blew past Mount Paran Christian 35-14 on Friday. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by 21 points or more this season.

Mount Vernon's receiving core played a big role in the win, headlined by Taurean Rawlins and Keon Clealand. Rawlins gained 146 total yards and four touchdowns while Clealand rushed for 70 yards and one touchdown on only nine carries. Rawlins also hauled in two receiving touchdowns, which is notable because Mount Vernon is 4-1 when he posts at least two receiving touchdowns, but 1-4 otherwise.
Mount Vernon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 253 rushing yards. They are a perfect 4-0 when they've run for more than 200 yards.
One reason for the win was Mount Vernon's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Ethan Siggers, Coleson Quesinberry, and Rigby Anderson, who each picked up one sack apiece. Mount Vernon got some further help from Siggers: he picked up a sack and made 18 total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Savannah Country Day). They were the clear victors by a 35-12 margin over Vidalia on Friday. The Hornets not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since October 25, 2024 (when they won 33-10).
Mount Vernon better keep an eye on Thomas Holland. He was instrumental in Savannah Country Day's win, rushing for 137 yards and five scores, while also picking up 39 receiving yards. Those five rushing touchdowns gave Holland a new career-high. Peyton Bean did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 82 receiving yards.
Savannah Country Day's win was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 4-6. As for Mount Vernon, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Mount Vernon has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 179.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Savannah Country Day struggles in that department as they've been averaging 162.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Mount Vernon came up short against Savannah Country Day in their previous matchup back in November of 2024, falling 23-17. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
