Hope Christian hasn't had much luck against Albuquerque Academy recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Huskies will look to defend their home field against the Chargers at 4:00 p.m. Hope Christian is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12.2 runs per game this season.
Hope Christian will bounce into Friday's contest after beating Bernalillo, who they had gone 0-9 against in their nine prior meetings. The Huskies walked away with a 9-4 win over the Spartans on Wednesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Huskies.
Iliana Cordova spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on six hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Ella McFadden was a standout: she scored a run while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Quanz, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one triple.
McFadden wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Hope Christian kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The Huskies are a perfect 6-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Albuquerque Academy sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over Valley on Wednesday.
Melissa Purcella was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. Purcella was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Brooklynn Dominguez was excellent, scoring a run while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted three RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Sydney Koranyi was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.
Hope Christian's win bumped their record up to 8-3. As for Albuquerque Academy, the victory got them back to even at 7-7.
Friday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Hope Christian has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .581. However, it's not like Albuquerque Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .474. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Hope Christian might still be hurting after the 24-7 defeat they got from Albuquerque Academy in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Huskies avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
