The George Jenkins Eagles will be taking part in a tournament against the Santa Fe Catholic Hawks at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (George Jenkins 2.1, Santa Fe Catholic 3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
George Jenkins barely beat Fort Meade the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Eagles were the clear victors by a 12-0 margin over the Miners on Wednesday. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by six runs or more this season.
Not much got past Braden Smith, who gave up just two hits to keep Fort Meade off the board. Smith has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Kam Wilson was excellent, scoring two runs while going 1-for-1. Bryce Vern also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
George Jenkins was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .438. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Fort Meade only posted a batting average of .143.
Meanwhile, Santa Fe Catholic unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of McKeel Academy by a score of 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Hawks have suffered since March 14th.
Easton Beach made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Marvin Montenegro, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.
George Jenkins has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 13 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Santa Fe Catholic, their loss dropped their record down to 19-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. George Jenkins has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Santa Fe Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
George Jenkins couldn't quite finish off Santa Fe Catholic when the teams last played back in February and fell 2-0. Can the Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
