The Apollo Eagles will challenge the Lyon County Lyons at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Apollo 1.9, Lyon County 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Apollo is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Kentucky's top teams: McCracken County, who was ranked fifth at the time (Apollo was ranked 16th). The Eagles fell just short of the Mustangs by a score of 6-4 on Friday. That makes it the first time this season the Eagles have let down their home crowd.
Apollo saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sam Holder, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Gunnar Hendricks also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Lyon County, who bounced back after a loss on the road two weeks ago. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Caldwell County a 6-0 shutout on Friday. The result was nothing new for the Lyons, who have now won three matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Peyton Williams made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one hit in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Korben Lucas, who scored a run while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Turner Hurst, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Lyon County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Caldwell County only posted an OBP of .231.
Lyon County's victory bumped their record up to 6-4. As for Apollo, their loss dropped their record down to 5-3.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Apollo hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .338. However, it's not like Lyon County struggles in that department as they've averaged .318. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
