Baseball Recap: Wayne County Comes Up Short

Wayne County extended their losing streak to six on Monday, dropping their season record down to 14-16 in the process. They lost 17-5 to the South Jones Braves. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Braves this season, with their most recent loss being a 8-2 defeat on Saturday.

Brayson Graham was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Wayne County's success: when he posts at least one home run the team is 2-1 (and 12-15 when he doesn't). Hudsen Mills was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles.

As for South Jones, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 26-6 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 18 contests by six runs or more this season.

On South Jones' side, Micah Coutta was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). Coutta has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run and five RBI. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Eyan Butler and Cayden Kinmon did most of the damage at the plate: Butler went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, while Kinmon got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs and two doubles. That's the most runs Butler has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Mylan Dykes, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.

While Wayne County had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled on Tuesday.
