The Firth Cougars are taking a road trip to square off against the Melba Mustangs at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Friday, Firth got the win against New Plymouth by a conclusive 28-12. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cougars.

Firth let Grant Vasquez and Brycen Andersen run wild. Vasquez went 5-for-7 with three stolen bases, four runs, and four RBI, while Andersen got on base in five of his six plate appearances with five runs, six RBI, and one triple. Those five runs gave Andersen a new career-high. Quinton Hall was another key player, getting on base in four of his six plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Firth kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as New Plymouth only managed six.
Meanwhile, Melba hadn't done well against Weiser recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Mustangs blew past the Wolverines 17-6. While the Mustangs didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Cooper Brooks was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Brooks was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. That home run was his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ty Martineau, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. Those hits were his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Kelton Bodily, who went 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Firth now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Melba, their record is now 4-1.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Firth has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.7 hits per game. However, it's not like Melba struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.6 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Firth couldn't quite finish off Melba when the teams last played back in March of 2025 and fell 10-8. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
