Northern recap September 17, 2013
Central Valley moved up to 318 from 497 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Northern. The Falcons climbed the ranks as a result of besting Orland 21-19.
Corning was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from third to first in the league. Earlier in the week, the Cardinals triumphed over Oroville 31-6.
Yreka's dynamic duo of Tyler Currie and Martin Esparza proved to be unstoppable against Phoenix, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Currie threw for 220 yards and Esparza had 84 yards receiving. Thomas Colla helped Yreka's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 76 yards.
The Miners' dynamic duo of Currie and Esparza proved tough for the Pirates to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Kyle Barnetche was a beast in the backfield as Lassen topped Chico.
Barnetche was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 22 carries, he ran for 220 yards as the Grizzlies fell to Phoenix. Case Bennett also contributed to the rushing game with 142 yards on the ground.
Currie put up the best numbers in passing as Orlyn L Culp II's team fell to Toby Walker's team.
Esparza was the best wideout in Northern this week as the Miners lost to the Pirates.
Quinn Thompson made the biggest impact on defense this week as Lassen defeated the Panthers. The 5-foot-9 junior.
6-foot-2 quarterback Currie of Yreka is the league leader in passing yards this season with 381. He has also thrown 3 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Franky Shepherd. The Lassen star has 9 catches for 108 yards.
Anderson lost to Red Bluff 42-8 last week, the largest margin of any game. Jacob Hanes was a bright spot for the Cubs, as he ran for 56 yards in the loss.
