Softball Game Preview: San Clemente Tritons vs. Northgate Broncos

The San Clemente Tritons will face off against the Northgate Broncos at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. San Clemente is coming into the contest hot, having won their last eight games.

San Clemente proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 11) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Beckman 4-3.

Luca Cifuentes looked comfortable as she didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 15 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, San Clemente's win was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Emily Racine, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave Racine a new career-high. Sophie Nachman was another, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

San Clemente was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .346 or higher in three consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Northgate has relied on a stalwart pitcher averaging 3.14 runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Wednesday. They lost 10-1 to Castro Valley. The game marked the Broncos' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

San Clemente's victory was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-5-1. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. As for Northgate, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-3 record this season.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. San Clemente has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Northgate struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
