Pebble Hills is 8-2 against Coronado since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Pebble Hills Spartans will welcome the Coronado Thunderbirds at 10:00 a.m. This will be Pebble Hills' first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
Pebble Hills came into their game on Saturday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Westlake, falling 11-4.
Alex Melendez was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-2.
Even though they lost, Pebble Hills always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .531. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Coronado had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Wednesday. They blew past the Cougars 11-1. The result was nothing new for the Thunderbirds, who have now won six contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Coronado also got a great performance from Jaxon Baptist as he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Baptist has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ben Wilson, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles, and one stolen base. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in doubles. Walt Mann was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one triple, one run, and one double.
Coronado's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-5. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Pebble Hills, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
Everything went Pebble Hills' way against Coronado when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Pebble Hills made off with an 11-4 victory. Does Pebble Hills have another victory up their sleeve, or will Coronado turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
