The Newington Nor'easters had to kick off their season on the road on Tuesday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top against East Hartford by a score of 43-35. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Newington also won the last time the pair played back in January.
Newington can attribute much of their success to Bela Cucuta, who scored 31 points along with four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Haylie Sanchez, who scored four points along with ten rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why East Hartford lost, one person who can't be blamed is Zoe Mercado. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points. Another player making a difference was Nia Edens, who scored seven points.
Newington's win was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 1-0. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.4 points per game. As for East Hartford, their loss dropped their record down to 0-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newington will challenge Edwin O. Smith at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for East Hartford, they will head out on the road to face off against RHAM at 6:45 p.m. on Friday.
