A well-balanced attack led the Sun Valley Spartans over the Monroe Redhawks in every quarter on their way to victory on Wednesday. Sun Valley was the clear victor by a 46-25 margin over Monroe. Given Sun Valley's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 175th, while Monroe is ranked 470th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sun Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tyra Robinson led the charge by scoring 11 points along with four steals. Robinson has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Mariah Garcia, who scored nine points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Despite the loss, Monroe still got an impressive performance from Saniya Gingham, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds. Gingham hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for four straight games. Jahdallia Montgomery was another key contributor, scoring two points along with six rebounds and four steals.
The win makes it two in a row for Sun Valley and bumps their season record up to 12-10. As for Monroe, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-13.
Sun Valley will head out on the road to face off against Marvin Ridge at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Marvin Ridge is coming into the game with nine straight victories at home, meaning Sun Valley will have to defend against a squad hungry for a win. Monroe will take on Parkwood at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Monroe focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 28 on Wednesday.
