The St. Thomas Catholic Eagles put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They strolled past Antonian Prep with points to spare, taking the game 42-24. 42 seems to be a good number for St. Thomas Catholic as the team scooped up a win with the same number of points in their previous game.
It was another big night for Johann Cardenas, who rushed for 275 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 7.1 yards per carry. Cardenas hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for eight straight games. Luke Edgecomb did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 85 receiving yards and a touchdown.
St. Thomas Catholic's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB 5.5 times. The heavy lifting was done by Dominic Ori and Jack Reid who racked up four sacks between them.
When it comes to explaining why Antonian Prep lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jayce Toscano. Despite the final result, he threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground.
St. Thomas Catholic's victory was their fifth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 10-0. It's not like the team was facing easy opposition over that stretch either, as it included 10-2 St. Thomas Catholic and 7-3 Lumberton (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 68.5% over those games). As for Antonian Prep, their loss dropped their record down to 8-2.
St. Thomas Catholic does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Antonian Prep will have plenty of time to ponder what went wrong as they've got a bye scheduled next week. After, they'll take on Trinity Christian at 6:00 p.m. on November 17th. Trinity Christian will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 581st, while Antonian Prep is ranked 281st).
