The Hammond Skyhawks lost against the Cardinal Newman Cardinals back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. Hammond fell just short of Cardinal Newman by a score of 42-40. Hammond has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
It was another big night for Amarii King, who scored 18 points along with two steals for Cardinal Newman. King hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Elton Smith jr., who scored four points along with five assists and two steals.
Hammond's loss dropped their record down to 12-8. As for Cardinal Newman, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a massive bump to their 17-14 record this season.
Hammond will be playing in front of their home fans against Heathwood Hall Episcopal at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Hammond is not getting complacent, as they presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Heathwood Hall Episcopal in South Carolina (Hammond is ranked 45th, while Heathwood Hall Episcopal is ranked 167th). As for Cardinal Newman, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Trinity Collegiate at 7:30 p.m. on February 7th. Hopefully Cardinal Newman focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up seven on Tuesday.
