The Lawrence County Red Devils are taking a road trip to square off against the Haleyville Lions at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Lawrence County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Lawrence County is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Boaz just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell just short of the Pirates by a score of 3-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Red Devils have suffered since April 25, 2024.
Elijah Tuckier was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Tripp Engle made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Haleyville). They put the hurt on Rogers with a sharp 16-0 win on Saturday. The victory was familiar territory for the Lions, who have now won four matchups in a row.
Eli Cagle and Cooper McNutt were a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Cagle tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, McNutt pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Cagle also tossed no walks, which is notable because Haleyville is undefeated when he allows at most two walks, but 4-6 otherwise. At bat, Cagle scored three runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-2, while McNutt scored three runs and stole Three bases. while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Jadyn Marbutt was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. Haleyville is undefeated when Marbutt posts two or more runs, but 4-6 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Will McCullar, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
Haleyville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .421. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rogers only posted a batting average of .118.
Haleyville now has a winning record of 7-6. As for Lawrence County, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-3.
Haleyville's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Lawrence County has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Haleyville, though, as they've been averaging only 3.5 strikeouts. Will Lawrence County keep running through batters, or will Haleyville buck the trend?
Everything went Lawrence County's way against Haleyville when the teams last played two weeks ago, as Lawrence County made off with a 10-4 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Lawrence County since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
