Edcouch-Elsa is 0-3 against Harlingen South since November of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets will head out on the road to face off against the Harlingen South Hawks at 7:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Tuesday, Edcouch-Elsa was fully in charge, breezing past Donna North 61-14 on the road. That looming 61-14 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Edcouch-Elsa yet this season.
Meanwhile, Harlingen South scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Pace 68-13 on the road. Given Harlingen South's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 509th, while Pace is ranked 1344th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Harlingen South got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jiselle Montemayor out in front who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and five steals. The matchup was Montemayor's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Serena Cano, who scored 14 points along with three steals.
The win makes it two in a row for Edcouch-Elsa and bumps their season record up to 6-7. As for Harlingen South, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-7.
Edcouch-Elsa suffered a grim 46-20 defeat to Harlingen South in their previous matchup back in January. Can Edcouch-Elsa avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
