The Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils will head out to square off against the James Buchanan Rockets at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Greencastle-Antrim is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Greencastle-Antrim is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 11 runs on Tuesday, they were much more limited against Shippensburg on Thursday. They took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Greyhounds.
Greencastle-Antrim got a good showing from Ben Horst, who tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Horst has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Greencastle-Antrim saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Avery Horst, who went 2-for-3 with one run. Cam Rakaczewski also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
James Buchanan came out on top against Northern York on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run fifth inning. The Rockets' pitcher stepped up to hand the Polar Bears a 10-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Rockets, who have now won four games by six runs or more so far this season.
Carter Hissong was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Drew Crouse, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
The victory made it two in a row for James Buchanan and bumps their season record up to 7-4-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Greencastle-Antrim, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Greencastle-Antrim has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like James Buchanan struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Greencastle-Antrim couldn't quite finish off James Buchanan in their previous matchup back in March and fell 2-0. Can the Blue Devils avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
