The Sparta Spartans pushed their score all the way to 60 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 68-60 to Reedsburg. If Sparta was looking for revenge after losing 61-50 to them when the teams met, then they'll just have to keep looking.
Gavin Rhead and Grant Geier certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Rhead dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Geier scored 17 points along with six rebounds and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of John Rice, who scored 11 points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Sparta were working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. This was only their 11th loss (out of 15 games) when they've passed the ball that well.
Sparta has traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-14 record this season. As for Reedsburg, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-15.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sparta will stay at home for another game and welcome the Hilltoppers at 7:15 p.m. on February 6th. Onalaska knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past nine matches -- so hopefully the Spartans like a good challenge. As for Reedsburg, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the Golden Eagles at 2:30 p.m. on February 3rd. Mauston is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road.
