Even though the Varela Vipers scored an imposing 64 points on Thursday, the Homestead Broncos still came out on top. Homestead snuck past Varela with a 69-64 win. Given Homestead's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 236th, while Varela is ranked 597th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Homestead's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Rodney Holmes, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds. Holmes is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last 15 games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeremiah Rodriguez, who scored 13 points along with two steals.
The victory makes it two in a row for Homestead and bumps their season record up to 13-5. As for Varela, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-12.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Homestead won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Palm Glades Prep Academy at 7:30 p.m. on January 26th. As for Varela, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against Ferguson at 7:30 p.m.
