The Quitman Panthers entered their tilt with the Northeast Jones Tigers with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Couldn't have asked for a better start to 2024 than the 69-42 blowout they got on the road against Northeast Jones. Given Quitman's advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 16th, while Northeast Jones is ranked 70th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Quitman's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from AIYANNA DEAR, who scored 21 points along with five assists and four steals. AALIYAH NIXON was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Despite the loss, Northeast Jones still got an impressive performance from Erin Jefferson, who scored 21 points along with five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Falasia Cooley, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
Quitman's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-3. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.7 points per game. As for Northeast Jones, their loss dropped their record down to 9-6.
Quitman won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Ingomar at 5:30 p.m. on January 6th. Ingomar is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune. As for Northeast Jones, they will head out on the road to face off against Forest at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
