Baseball Recap: Benjamin Smith and Kamden Frechette Secure Win for Wayne

Wayne had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 13-run drubbing they dealt Penn Yan Academy on Tuesday. The Eagles never let the Mustangs get on the board and left with a 13-0 victory. With that win, the Eagles brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

Kamden Frechette and Benjamin Smith made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Frechette tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Smith struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. At bat, Frechette got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base, while Smith went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits Smith has posted since back in May of 2025.

In other batting news, Caleb Celso was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Gehrig Locker was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.

Wayne hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in four consecutive games.

Wayne's victory bumped their record up to 15-2. As for Penn Yan Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 3-12.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Wayne will take on rival Geneva at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Eagles 2, the Panthers 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Penn Yan Academy is set to square off against their familiar foe Mynderse Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
