MaxPreps Sac-Joaquin Section Top 25 high school football rankings

The top four teams were idle, resting and preparing for league openers this week. No. 6 Del Oro (Loomis) topped new No. 8 St. Mary's (Stockton) 24-14 in the big game of the week.

1. (1) Folsom (5-0)
The Bulldogs were idle. Led by QB Jake Browning (a state-leading 30 touchdowns already), Folsom opens defense of its Delta River League and Sac-Joaquin Section Division II crown starting this week.
Next: No. 4 Oak Ridge, Friday

2. (2) Elk Grove (5-0)
The Thundering Herd was idle. Elk Grove looms as the favorite to win the Delta Valley Conference and compete for another D-II Sac-Joaquin Section title.

3. (3) Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) (5-0)
The Eagles were idle. With balance and a leader in QB Deaundre Terrell and a WR threat in Wyatt Demps, Pleasant Grove is a threat to win the Delta River League title and compete for a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title.

4. (4) Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) (5-0)
The Trojans were idle. With sophomore QB Ian Book and senior LB Thomas Mahlman, Oak Ridge expects to compete for the Delta River League title and return to the Sac-Joaquin Section D-I title game, this time to win it.

5. (5) Granite Bay (4-1)
The Grizzlies beat Lincoln of Stockton 36-21 as QB Josh Neal tossed three touchdowns, two to Marc Ellis and one to Dylan Keeney, and he ran for one. Granite Bay, the defending Sierra Foothill League and CIF State Division I champion, has won four straight since opening with a 30-15 loss to No. 1 Folsom.

6. (7) Del Oro (Loomis) (3-2)
The Golden Eagles beat previous No. 6 St. Mary's (Stockton) 24-14, pitching a second-half shutout and offering a lot of RB Dylan Kainrath, who chugged 30 times for 167 yards and three touchdowns. The defense is led by DE Tanner Woods and LB Tyler Meteer. This is a team expecting to win the Sierra Foothill League title and chase down another Sac-Joaquin Section D-II crown.

7. (7) Grant (Sacramento) (3-2)
The Pacers were idle. With size, speed and depth, Grant expects to compete for the Delta Valley Conference title, led by RB Deandre Whittington-Grays.

8. (6) St. Mary's (Stockton) (3-2)
The Rams lost at No. 6 Del Oro (Loomis) 24-14, and were shut out in the second half despite some gritty efforts by QB Kaleb Parrish. A 95-yard interception return for a score was negated due to a sideline warning penalty before the pass, in the second quarter. The other loss was to De La Salle (Concord).

9. (9) Burbank (Sacramento) (3-2)
The Titans survived a Metro Conference scare at Sacramento, holding on for a 34-32 victory as Calvin Green was the difference with a late 95-yard kickoff return for a score. QB Ernest Jenkins hit him with a 60-yard TD strike, too.

10. (10) Central Catholic (Modesto) (5-1)
The Raiders beat Pacheco (Los Banos) 24-21 in Western Athletic Conference play, leading 21-0 and then holding on. Star RB Matt Ringer had just one carry before suffering an ankle injury, though freshman Montell Bland carried 33 times for 194 yards and a score, and senior brother Reggie Bland went for 53 and two scores. The loss was to St. Mary's (Stockton).

11. (11) Rocklin (3-2)
The Thunder were idle. Rocklin expects to compete for a Sierra Foothill League title, and more. QB Logan Webb and emerging RB Evyn Holtz lead the way.

12. (12) Rio Linda (4-1)
The Knights beat previously unbeaten Ponderosa 21-7 as Marcel Brown scored on a 99-yard kickoff return and fellow RB Leonard Skattebo pounded out tough yards between the tackles. This is your Capital Valley Conference favorite.
Next: Bella Vista (Fair Oaks), Friday

13. (13) Manteca (4-1)
The Buffaloes rolled Lathrop 56-7 on homecoming night and still look the part of Valley Oak League favorites. Joe Menzel tossed five first-half touchdowns. Next is a showdown with the longtime section power Oakdale.

14. (14) Pitman (Turlock) (4-1)
The Pride were idle. The last game was a 42-7 loss at No. 3 Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove), serving as plenty of motivation. This is still your Central California Conference favorite.

15. (15) Tokay (Lodi) (5-0)
The Tigers were idle. Coaches did scout Tri-City Athletic League rival St. Mary's (Stockton) on Friday, the team Tokay has to topple to take the league title.

16. (16) Jesuit (Carmichael) (5-0)
After blasting Laguna Creek (Elk Grove) 63-14, the Marauders are off to their best start in years, and they expect to contend for the Delta River League title along with ranked heavies in Folsom, Oak Ridge and Pleasant Grove. QB Jason Elenberger and RBs Beau Bisharat and Ben Parietti and TE/LB Austin Gates lead the way.

17. (17) Yuba City (5-0)
The Honkers were idle. Yuba City aims to defend its Tri-County Athletic League title, winning its first league championship a year ago for the first time since 1987, by downing Inderkum. RB Omar Herrera leads the way.
Next: No. 18 Inderkum (Sacramento), Friday

18. (18) Inderkum (Sacramento) (3-2)
The Tigers were idle. Behind QB C. J. Spencer and a bevy of backs, Inderkum expects to win its sixth Tri-County League title in seven years.

19. (20) Casa Roble (Orangevale) (4-1)
The Rams were idle. From 1-9 a year ago to now thinking of a Capital Valley Conference title, Casa Roble is back on championship track behind QB ace Peyton Wilfley.

20. (21) Stagg (Stockton) (4-1)
The Delta Kings beat Chavez (Stockton) 50-25 despite not having star QB Wayne Brooks, sidelined with a hamstring strain. In his place, Daniel Ruffin passed for 300 yards and five touchdowns, hitting five different targets. Stagg will compete for the Tri-City Athletic League title with ranked rivals in St. Mary's and Tokay.

21. (22) American Canyon (4-1)
The Wolves were idle. Led by QB Michael Rapacon and RB Jomon Dotson, American Canyon looms as the Solano County Athletic Conference favorite.
Next: Vallejo, Friday

22. (19) Vacaville (2-3)
The Bulldogs have endured a brutal schedule, beating NorCal-ranked Valley Christian (San Jose) and losing close games to No. 4 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills), No. 5 Granite Bay and to NorCal-ranked Deer Valley (Antioch). This still looms as your Monticello Empire League favorite.

23. (24) Franklin (Elk Grove) (3-2)
The young Wildcats were idle. The last game was a clunker 42-7 loss to No. 16 Jesuit. The defending Delta Valley Conference champion Wildcats expect a repeat.

24. (25) Wood (Vacaville) (4-1)
The Wildcats of the Monticello Empire League beat Vallejo 29-6. The loss was in the opener to No. 21 American Canyon (38-22).
Next: Armijo (Fairfield), Friday

25. (NR) Tracy (4-1)
The Bulldogs are off to a fast start, losing only to then-No. 12 Franklin (Elk Grove) and since allowing just 27 points in the next three games. The goal is to win the San Joaquin Athletic Association title, two seasons after going 3-7.
