After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Fullerton, Newman Grove/St. Edward was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 62-59 victory over the Central Valley Cougars. The Panthers' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
It was another big night for Kailey Patzel, who dropped a double-double with 25 points and 24 rebounds. That makes it six consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Newman Grove/St. Edward's points. Allyx Forre was another key player, putting up 14 points and five boards.
Newman Grove/St. Edward smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive boards. They are 2-15 when they hit their own glass that hard.
Several Cougars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Newman Grove/St. Edward picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 2-19. As for Central Valley, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 13 of their last 16 matches, which has put a noticeable dent in their 5-17 record this season.
Looking ahead, Newman Grove/St. Edward will head out on the road to challenge Nebraska Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Nebraska Christian will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Newman Grove/St. Edward surely won't give up without a fight. As for Central Valley, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 57-37 win against Twin Loup on the 14th.
