Basketball Recap: Amphitheater Gets the Win

Amphitheater won the last time they faced Walden Grove, and Matthew Vital did his part to make sure it happened again. The Amphitheater Panthers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 68-66 win over the Walden Grove Red Wolves on Friday thanks in part to Vital, who went 9 of 18 on his way to 22 points along with eight assists and five boards. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 16.2 points per game.

The team also got some help courtesy of Andy Lopez, who almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine boards. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in rebounds.

Several Red Wolves players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Mitchel Collins, who posted 18 points. Imileo Martinez was another key player, putting up 14 points.

Amphitheater now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Walden Grove, they moved to 3-1 with that defeat, which also ended their four-game winning streak.

Amphitheater will host Canyon del Oro at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Canyon del Oro will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Amphitheater surely won't give up without a fight. As for Walden Grove, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 75-74 win against Sabino on the 9th.
