Pattonville athletic director Terry Funderburk did the right thing when he discovered the Pirates used an ineligible player in football victories over Hazelwood East and Parkway South last Friday.
Funderburk self-reported the gaffs to the Missouri State High School Activities Association, but his honesty will cost Pattonville a perfect season.
"We're disappointed about this error and how it impacts our kids," Funderburk told STLtoday.com. "We apologize for the effect it's going to have on our team."
MSHSAA assistant executive director overseeing football George Blas‚ said schools in these situations are required to write a report to the MSHSAA explaining how the infraction transpired and how to prevent it in the future. According to Blas‚, the MSHSAA Board of Directors will have to approve the forfeits at its next meeting.
Four Points-A-Minute
Union quarterback Jordan Webb certainly did his part in leading his team to victory in the third highest-scoring outbreak in Missouri high school football history.
Webb, who could reach the 2000-yard passing plateau in Union's game at Westminster Christian in St. Louis Saturday, threw for 444 yards and tied a Missouri high school record with eight touchdown passes in a 77-55 win over Hermann on Friday.
"I've never been in a game before where we scored that many points and we felt like we needed them all," Wildcat coach Brent Eckley told the STLtoday.com.
Webb has now thrown for more than 1600 yards this season.
