The Lawrence Academy Warriors fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the Northeast Academy Eagles on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 46-43. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Lawrence Academy came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 170th, while the Eagles are ranked 485th).
Lawrence Academy lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jaslene Ethridge, who scored seven points along with ten rebounds and three steals. Ethridge is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Trinity Congleton was another key contributor, scoring five points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Even though they lost, Lawrence Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 31 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Leading Northeast Academy to victory were Arland Davis and Hayes Hatcher. Davis dropped a double-double on ten points and 15 rebounds, while Hatcher dropped a double-double on 15 points and 22 rebounds. Hatcher hasn't dropped below 13 rebounds for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Jessa Pope, who scored 13 points.
This is the second loss in a row for Lawrence Academy and nudges their season record down to 12-7. As for Northeast Academy, their win ended a nine-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-12.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lawrence Academy will face off against the Colts at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Albemarle School is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak. As for Northeast Academy, they will head out on the road to take on the Raiders at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Pungo Christian Academy is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.
