Basketball Recap: Senaia Asanya's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Wekiva over Haines City

After flying high against Umatilla last Thursday, Wekiva came back down to earth. The Wekiva Mustangs lost to the Haines City Hornets at home by a 58-39 margin on Tuesday. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Mustangs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 52-41 back in November of 2024.

Wekiva lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Senaia Asanya, who posted ten points and three steals. That's the most steals Asanya has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Tiana Washington, who had eight points and six boards.

Haines City was led to victory by Delissa Morris and Delyana Morris. Delissa almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine assists, while Delyana put up 15 points in addition to eight rebounds and five steals. Delissa has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 15 times she's played. Olivia Howard was another key player, putting up six points along with ten boards and four steals.

Wekiva has traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for Haines City, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wekiva has already played their next matchup (against Horizon), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Haines City will host George Jenkins at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. Haines City is on a ten-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), George Jenkins a six-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
