Basketball Recap: Jovanni Ortiz Key Part of a Team Effort in Eagles Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Chapin, Canutillo was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They walked away with a 53-44 victory over the Jefferson Silver Foxes. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 291st, while the Silver Foxes are ranked 1177th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Canutillo got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jovanni Ortiz out in front who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten boards. The dominant performance also gave Ortiz a new career-high in blocks (three). Donovan Mozer was another key player, putting up 13 points.

Jefferson lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Jordan Valles, who posted nine points. Another player making a difference was Danyiel Sebastian Villa, who put up 12 points.

Canutillo pushed their record up to 20-8 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.0 points per game. As for Jefferson, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-22.

Canutillo didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 61-53 win against El Paso on the 4th. As for Jefferson, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 47-24 loss against Andress on the 4th.
