Sahuarita is 9-1 against Walden Grove since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Mustangs will be playing at home against the Red Wolves at 4:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Sahuarita 2.2, Walden Grove 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Sahuarita fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Salpointe Catholic on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Lancers by a score of 3-2. The Mustangs were red-hot at the plate heading into the match (they scored no less than ten runs in the three contests prior), but the Lancers' pitcher proved too tough.
Jayd Villa spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits.
On the hitting side, Sahuarita saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Camila Vargas, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Walden Grove got themselves on the board against Nogales on Friday, but Nogales never followed suit. They blew past the Apaches 10-0. The result was nothing new for the Red Wolves, who have now won seven games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Hannah Montijo was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. Isabel Higuera was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.
Walden Grove always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .542. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Walden Grove is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Sahuarita, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 19-4 record.
Thursday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Sahuarita hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .405. However, it's not like Walden Grove struggles in that department as they've averaged .357. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Sahuarita came out on top in a nail-biter against Walden Grove in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, sneaking past 2-1. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Red Wolves turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
