The Wellington Dukes will be home for the holidays to greet the Monroeville Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Wellington has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three contests by 21 points or more this season. Everything went their way against Western Reserve on Wednesday as Wellington made off with a 50-25 win. Given Wellington's advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 175th, while Western Reserve is ranked 412th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Wellington got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Hope Dudziak out in front who scored eight points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Dudziak has scored all season. Gabby Miller was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.
Meanwhile, Monroeville's four-game losing streak dating back to last season came to an end on Thursday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Crestview and snuck past 58-55. That looming 58-55 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Monroeville yet this season.
Wellington's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-1. As for Monroeville, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-3.
Wellington came up short against Monroeville in their previous matchup back in December of 2021, falling 43-38. Can Wellington avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
