Yvonne Anderson and Scott Suggs were named Missouri’s top high school basketball players for the 2007-08 season Sunday during the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State Banquet.
Anderson, a senior at Hickman, arrived in Columbia for her junior season after wowing Alabama high school basketball fans during her freshman and sophomore seasons. The daughter of University of Missouri head basketball coach Mike Anderson, Yvonne has continued to impress since coming to the Show Me State.
The 5-foot-7 Kewpie guard led Hickman to a 49-9 record and scored 1,301 points during her two seasons under the guidance of head coach Tonya Mirts. The Texas recruit averaged 23.6 points per game her senior season and reset the school’s single season scoring record at 664 points as a junior.
The 6-7 Suggs takes his game to the University of Washington after a senior season in which he averaged 22.5 points a game and pulled down nine rebounds. He will join longtime family friend and former NBA player Lorenzo Romar, who now coaches the Huskies.
Before leaving Washington (Mo.) Suggs left a mark that will be tough to beat. The shooting guard broke his school’s record for points in a career during a bittersweet loss to Parkway South at sectionals. Suggs, who poured in 1,774 points in his career, scored a career-high 42 points against the Patriots.
Baseball: Thiele Making up for Lost Time
After opting to sit out the 2008 baseball season, Leopold’s Dustin Thiele changed his mind. The Richland baseball team is regretting that decision.
In his first game back after participating in the required 14 practices before playing in a game, Thiele lit up the Bear pitching staff for two grand slams in a 15-run third inning during a 31-4 five-inning win for the Wildcats.
No Mercy From Stoutland
According to the Missouri Coaches Association, Stoutland fields the states second best team in Class 1. The Tigers, who have won six games in seven tries, are playing like it. Stoutland has out scored its opposition, in the six wins, by a 113-4 margin, and has thrown four no-hitters.
