Baseball Recap: Walkertown Comes Up Short

Walkertown extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping them down to 6-4. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the Morehead Panthers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-4 on Tuesday.

Cam Smith made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Walkertown is 5-1 when Smith posts two or more runs, but 1-3 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Owen Tidd, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

As for Morehead, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.5 runs over those games.

On Morehead's side, Ben Wade made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over 6.1 innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts Wade has posted since back in February. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.

In other batting news, Zachary Grogan was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Ayeden Haygood also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Walkertown will face off against rival Bartlett Yancey at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Morehead is set to challenge their familiar foe Reidsville at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
