Oakwood had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They pulled ahead with a 27-26 photo finish over the Momence Momence Athletics. This was payback for the Comets, who suffered a 40-12 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Kyler Johnson was a one-man wrecking crew as he rushed for 163 yards and a pair of TDs. He also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing one fumble and making five total tackles.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Oakwood was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 216 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Momence only rushed for 101 rushing yards.
Several Momence Athletics players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Erick Castillo, who threw for 166 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 87 yards and one score on only six carries. Momence's leading receiver Eddie Ferreira was Castillo's top target yet again, picking up 109 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
