Canton has been on the road for three straight, but on Tuesday they'll finally head home. They will take on the Gentry Rams at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.
Last Friday, Canton was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 38-32 to Holmes County Central.
Despite the loss, Canton saw an underclassman step up: Shamira Morton dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds. Morton is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. Kaniyah Hawkins was another key contributor, scoring five points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Gentry's recent rough patch got a bit rougher last Friday after their third straight loss. They took a 60-56 hit to the loss column at the hands of Holmes County Central. While losing is never fun, Gentry can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 105th, while Holmes County Central is ranked 33rd).
Canton's defeat ended a seven-game streak of away wins and brought them to 18-3. As for Gentry, their loss dropped their record down to 12-7.
Canton came out on top in a nail-biter against Gentry in their previous matchup on January 5th, sneaking past 41-38. Does Canton have another victory up their sleeve, or will Gentry turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
