The Avenal Buccaneers suffered their biggest loss since December 8, 2023 on Friday. They were outmatched by Coalinga on the road and fell 69-30. While losing is never fun, Avenal can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1219th, while Coalinga is ranked 584th).
Coalinga found their leader in underclassman Damyen Tamayo, who scored 24 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Tamayo is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Dylan Teixeira, who scored 13 points along with nine rebounds.
Avenal's defeat dropped their record down to 9-13. As for Coalinga, their victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-4.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Avenal will take on Firebaugh at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Coalinga, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on Mendota at 6:30 p.m. on January 23rd. Mendota is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
