The Monroe Golden Tornadoes came tearing into Tuesday's game with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.2 points) and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 61-48 win over Westover. Winning is a bit easier when your three-point shooting is a whole 28% better than the opposition, as Monroe's was.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Monroe to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kie'Aundria Acree, who scored 17 points along with nine rebounds and seven assists. Acree is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Ciarra Lunsford, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 13 rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Westover lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jada Landers. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 21 points and 16 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Wykieria Holmes, who scored 12 points along with two steals.
Monroe pushed their record up to 12-6 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.3 points per game. As for Westover, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-10 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Monroe will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Carver at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th. Carver knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight matchups -- so hopefully Monroe likes a good challenge. As for Westover, they will head out on the road to square off against Shaw at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
