Andrea Yagui spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Natalie Coughlin, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Elaina Primozic, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run.
West Springfield hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, South County made easy work of Edison on Monday and carried off a 10-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Stallions, who have now won 12 matches by six runs or more so far this season.
South County also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Maddie Grice gave up only one earned run on four hits and racked up 14 Ks. Those 14 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Grice.
At the plate, South County got a massive performance out of Ava Abromavage, who went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Lauren Mrowka was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
South County has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 16-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for West Springfield, their victory bumped their record up to 20-4.
Wednesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. West Springfield has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .455. However, it's not like South County struggles in that department as they've averaged .450. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
West Springfield might still be hurting after the 8-2 defeat they got from South County when the teams last played back in April. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
