Baseball Game Preview: P.K. Yonge Blue Wave vs. Gainesville Hurricanes

The P.K. Yonge Blue Wave will head out to face off against the Gainesville Hurricanes at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

While Blue Wave fans will have to keep waiting for their team to come home, they shouldn't be too worried about the road trip considering the result of Tuesday's season opener. They put the hurt on Oak Hall with a sharp 10-4 victory on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Blue Wave have posted against the Eagles since March 5, 2020.

Darius Medley made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Medley was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Preston Splitt, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Gainesville took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Tuesday. They blew past Eastside 12-1.

Taylor Brewer was a standout: he scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-2. The team also got some help courtesy of Cade Dixon, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Gainesville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .655. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Eastside only posted an OBP of .381.

P.K. Yonge took their victory against Gainesville in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 12-0. Will P.K. Yonge repeat their success, or does Gainesville have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
